The oldest and most famous hunting magazine “Beccacce che Passione” presents us with a detailed analysis of the ballistic tests of the 10 most specialized hunting cartridges for woodcock hunting!

Woodcock hunting, ballistically, is determined by a few meters and a few centimeters. A few meters that separate the hunter from the prey and a few more centimeters in the diameter of the dispersion of the pellets can make the difference.

The danger in shots from 10 to 20 meters is the high concentration of pellets with unpleasant consequences for the integrity of the prey and inevitable, annoying misses. To avoid this, most hunters choose the so-called dispersion cartridges.

But how exactly does a dispersion cartridge differ from any other hunting cartridge?

This is the question, which was attempted to be answered with a series of ballistic tests aimed at evaluating the ballistic performance of a series of hunting cartridges with different characteristics proposed by leading Italian, and not only, companies.

The "protagonists" of the test were the Golden Queen hunting cartridges by Alg Munizioni, the Mb Dispersante by Baschieri & Pellagri, the Dispersante 34 by Bornaghi, the Dispersante 32 by Cheddite, the Scolopax by Danesi, the Woodcock by Fiocchi, the Dispersante 35 by Nobel Sport Italia, the Rc3 Dispersante by Rc, the Game edition Beccaccia by Rottweil and the Ranger Disperser by Winchester.

The hunting cartridges are filled with different powders and are characterized by different options in terms of concentrators and shot weight ranging from 32gr to 38gr. The only thing they have in common is the 70mm long case, with a different color and a 6-ply star closure.

ALG Munizioni - Golden Queen

ALG Munizioni - Golden Queen Dispersante 34g

ALG is a relatively new company that specializes in the production of dispersion cartridges. Its flagship product for woodcock hunting is the Golden Queen cartridges, specialized for humid climates, and the Silver Queen, more suitable for dry climates. Since woodcock hunting is often characterized by adverse weather conditions and typical autumn or winter temperatures, we chose to test the Golden Queen Dispersante 34g cartridges. The peculiarity of this cartridge is the special plastic dispersion, which consists of four spiral fins that determine the rapid opening of the shot beam.

Nobel Sport Italia - Prestige Dispersante 35g

Nobel Sport Italia's Prestige range consists of four top-of-the-line hunting products, which have a type 4 case and use materials of excellent quality. As for the dispersion cartridges, NSI recommends the Prestige Dispersante 35g, which stand out for their characteristic white case and the high-performance Vectan powder. The concentrator consists of a bior-interceptor concentrator on which is placed a cross-dispersor with a central cylinder that helps to maintain a more well-distributed center of dispersion of the shot.

Which hunting cartridges should I choose?

The answer is naturally not so obvious. The widest shot spread is not necessarily the best and the choice depends a lot on the hunter's shooting habits and the characteristics of the weapon he intends to use.

A wide shot spread, with many shots off the board, is only suitable for fast shooters and at short distances, always taking care not to shoot too low and close to the dogs.

The problem becomes more evident when using a Paradox choke, which is completely useless as a second rifle in combination with scatter cartridges.

Therefore, if you have a semi-automatic rifle with a Paradox choke, it is preferable to choose, especially for the second rifle, a cartridge with a concentrator, while for the first rifle you could also consider choosing a scatter cartridge.

On the other hand, for those who usually use a cylinder***** or a demi*** choke, the use of dispersion cartridges offers tangible advantages at a distance of 15-20 meters, without the dispersion of the shots ever being so wide as to be dangerous for the dog or for any other hunters.

Even a rifle at 10 meters, with a dispersion cartridge and a cylinder choke, the dispersion that results is undoubtedly much greater than that of a traditional load. The dispersion cycle can be compared to that which can be achieved with a load equipped with a concentrator at a distance of 20 or 25 meters.

The use of dispersion cartridges, however, is not limited to woodcock hunting, but can be useful for all forms of hunting in which it is important to have a wide dispersion of shots even at short distances, both to increase the chances of hitting the target and to avoid excessive "damage" to the prey, especially for hunters who tend to shoot quickly and instinctively.
