The Woodpigeon (Columba palumbus): Characteristics, Habits, and Strategies for a Successful Hunt

The woodpigeon (Columba palumbus) is the largest columbid bird in Europe, standing out for both its impressive size and its distinct characteristics.

What are its main characteristics?

  1. Size: The length of the woodpigeon ranges from 38 to 44 centimeters, with a wingspan that can reach 68-77 centimeters. Weighing approximately 450-600 grams, it is significantly larger than the common city pigeon.
  2. Color: Its body is grey-olive, with a lighter-colored belly and a characteristic white patch on the neck (resembling a "collar"), making it easily recognizable. It also features two white stripes on its wings, which are clearly visible during flight.
  3. Head and Beak: The head is relatively small compared to the body, featuring a short, strong beak of an orange-red hue.
  4. Legs: Its legs are reddish and strong, perfectly adapted for walking and grasping seeds or other food sources.

What else should you know about it?

The woodpigeon is primarily a herbivorous bird, feeding on seeds, grains, berries, and shoots. It has a particular fondness for beech mast. While acorns used to be its typical staple diet, the expansion of industrial farming has shifted its preference entirely toward seeds from cultivated lands, such as cereal fields.

Regarding its social behavior, woodpigeons often live in small groups and are famous for gathering in massive flocks during migration. Its voice features a characteristic deep cooing call, which can be heard from a distance and is repeated several times.

Its preferred habitats include woodlands, parks, and agricultural areas with trees. Although woodpigeons thrive in wild regions, they adapt easily to areas close to human activity, particularly in Northern Europe. Its population in Europe is stable and, in several cases, growing. According to estimates, the European breeding population is calculated at 14-28 million pairs.

There are both migratory and sedentary (non-migratory) woodpigeons. Migratory populations belong mainly to Northern and Eastern Europe, moving toward southern regions (e.g., the Mediterranean) during winter. Non-migratory populations reside in countries with mild climates, such as Spain and Portugal.

Is there a threat to the woodpigeon population?

The woodpigeon population has significantly benefited from the extensive use of cultivated agricultural land, where it finds an abundance of food. Generally, the species faces no major threats, as it remains widespread and highly successful in adapting to diverse European environments. In fact, in some countries like the United Kingdom, it is considered a pest, and hunting it is permitted year-round.

In Greece, woodpigeon hunting is highly popular, regarded as one of the most delicious game birds that offers a genuine challenge to the hunter. Although a few decades ago (from the 60s to the 80s) Greek hunters overlooked it due to the high cost of cartridges, since the early 90s, it has transformed into one of the most attractive game species. Today, it attracts countless dedicated enthusiasts, some of whom hunt it exclusively.

Strategies and ideal conditions for a successful woodpigeon hunt

Prime hunting locations are those with dense vegetation or areas adjacent to crop fields where the birds feed. Woodpigeons are typically hunted during their migration period, with autumn—and specifically after October 10th—being the ideal season. However, "winter" quests by passionate woodpigeon hunters are considered the most thrilling. Overcast days with a light breeze favor the hunt, as woodpigeons fly lower and slower under these weather conditions.

The most common tactic is setting up an ambush (pass-shooting) along the flyways where woodpigeons pass at high altitudes, as well as in the corridors between their roosting sites and feeding grounds—where they can literally fly right over your head. Their movement from the roosting site to the feeding grounds begins around 7:30 am until 9:00 am, by which time they have selected a quiet, food-rich spot. Activity is observed again around 12:00 pm when they move for water, and finally from 14:00 onwards, as they gradually return to their roost. As columbids, they tend to roost quite early, around 16:30. However, it is not uncommon to see them arriving at the roost "at the very last minute"—even after 17:30—either because they were disturbed at their intended sleeping spot or because they kept feeding until late.

Shotguns and Equipment

Hunters typically use over-and-under, side-by-side, or semi-automatic shotguns with barrel lengths of 71 or 76 cm, equipped with tight chokes ranging from Modified to Full (3 to 1 stars). Barrel technology and shot pattern quality play a decisive role in cleanly taking down this remarkably tough game bird. FABARM, with its tapered TRIBORE barrels and oversized HYPERBOLIC HP chokes, has proven its unmatched value in woodpigeon hunting for years.

Suitable cartridges for a game bird like the woodpigeon are those that make no compromises on material quality, as absolute performance in power, pattern distribution, and effective range is mandatory. The payload usually ranges from 33-34 grams with single-base powder for autumn, up to 36-43 grams with double-base powder for colder, humid weather. Shot sizes vary from No. 4 to No. 7, with No. 5 and No. 6 being the top preferences.

Check out the product line by NOBEL SPORT ITALIA for warm to moderate temperatures. However, there are times when our blind setup or the weather forces the birds to fly at low altitudes. Here, NOBEL SPORT ITALIA dominates with two exceptional cartridges for shots ranging from 10 to 30 meters, which should never be missing from a passionate hunter's backpack:

  • The outstanding DISPERSANTE PRESTIGE 35, featuring a unique patented spreader cross that delivers a pattern spread of about 40 cm at 10 meters up to 1 meter at 30 meters (using a 3-star/Modified choke).
  • The classic fiber-wad MASTER HP TECNA 36 and the nostalgic GOLDEN WING 36 with its traditional paper hull.

Harvesting this magnificent bird is anything but easy. A successful woodpigeon hunt demands preparation, scouting, deep knowledge of the area and weather, an understanding of the bird's habits, immense patience, proper concealment, and excellent shooting skills. It is not uncommon for hunters, even when meeting all the right criteria, to return to base completely empty-handed, wondering "what went wrong."

A major culprit behind this is often the wrong choice of clothing—a key factor for success against such a suspicious and clever game bird. Generally, a small hint of blaze orange or another contrasting color won't make a massive difference in how the woodpigeon perceives us, as long as major color contrasts with the surrounding environment are avoided.

What WILL make a difference, however, is breaking up the outline of the human silhouette—especially the hunter’s face. The woodpigeon can spot the human shape and the slightest movement from hundreds of meters away; a massive flock can veer off in a fraction of a second the moment they recognize an image that screams "DANGER." Therefore, well-tailored, comfortable, warm, yet low-bulk clothing is essential, while a cap or a balaclava to break up the shape of the face is deemed absolutely mandatory.

Whether you are one of those dedicated hunters who fill up the gas tank and scout all day long to locate and hunt the woodpigeon from late August until the end of the season, or an occasional enthusiast who pursues them only when they appear in high numbers, one thing is certain: despite the exhaustion and the occasional failure, this magnificent bird offers one of the most beautiful hunting experiences. And no one—absolutely NO ONE—has ever regretted dedicating their time to figuring out how to put a woodpigeon in their game bag.
